NET Bible : The Biblical Studies Foundation
Debbie's cousin Patti and her husband Dan are in Prague for 23 hours so we are spending some time hanging with the rellies. It is my first time meeting Dan. He is a Greek Geek who teaches Greek at a little school called Dallas Theological Seminary, (which shows great potential). He is on a one year Sabbatical, chasing down old manuscripts of the Bible, which is why he is passing through town. He travels with a couple of G4 Tibooks and a lot of scanning equipment so he can scan the manuscripts and burn DVDs. They take up a fair bit of room so he recently emailed Steve Jobs and asked for a 125 Terrabyte Mac.
Good try.
Dan, who has written the Greek book that most Seminaries now use (I know . . . all Greek to me . . yeah, yeah, whatever) has been behind a project called the NET Bible. Millions of people (really!)have gone here to download Bible studies and many people have got the hard copy Net Bible, which comes with enough notes to chock the wheel of a plane on a steep hill.
His search for manuscripts sounds a lot like the Celtic pilgrimages of old. He has been the first guy to examine some of them. And he leaves a gift - a scanned image of the manuscript.
Anyway, you may never meet Dan Wallace, since he is probably in a dank basement reading the papyrus of a dead Greek speaking dude who liked the Bible. But is good to know that people like this exist.
Personally, I like the guy. I meet a lot of PhD people and some of them have stopped learning. But Dan loves knowledge and has a very active mind - so we have had some good conversation.
Ladies and Gentleman, DAN WALLACE, a relative by marriage, a good man, coming to a basement near you!
